PRESS RELEASE

01-19-2004

On January 19, 2004 at approximately 2:00 PM the Elyria Police Department responded to the report of a shooting at 515 Woodland Ave, Elyria.  Responding Officers located the victim, Darrell Oskins, age 51, of 515 Woodland, on the ground in front of that address.  Officers were advised by witnesses that the suspect, Paul Hashman, age 82, of 519 Woodland Ave, who was standing in his front yard, had shot Oskins.  Hashman was taken into custody without incident.  The weapon, a Harrington & Richardson .22 calibre revolver was recovered at the scene.

Lifecare Ambulance responded and transported Oskins to the Elyria Memorial Hospital for treatment.  Oskins sustained four gun shot wounds.  Once in the shoulder, once in the leg, and twice in the abdomen.  Oskins was later transported to Cleveland Metro Hospital for treatment.

The preliminary investigation has indicated that this shooting is the result of an on-going neighbor dispute.  Oskins was operating a snow blower in front of his address when he was approached by Hashman, who pulled a gun and started to shoot at him.  There was a struggle over the gun, and the gun was later found in the snow near Oskins.  Hashman has made admissions to his involvement in the shooting.

Paul Hashman is being held at the Elyria Police Department Jail on the charge of Attempted Murder, A Felony 1.  There will be no bond pending his court appearance on January 20, 2004 in the Elyria Municiple Court.
