On December 28, 1999, an inmate attempted to commit suicide in the Elyria City Jail. He placed a white cloth around his neck, tied the other end around an upper railing and jumped. While hanging, CO Marcum, CO. Beard and C.O. Brown responded. The corrections officers were able prevent the inmate's suicide attempt by lifting his legs upwards and untying the white cloth from the upper railing. The inmate was lowered to safety and transported to the Elyria Memorial Hospital. For their courageous effort and saving the life of the inmate, the Elyria Police Department is honored to present the Lifesaving Award to Corrections Officers Marcum, Beard and Brown.
