Chief Medders joined the Elyria Police Department on May 12, 1976, starting as a beat officer. After walking his beat for a year, he was then transferred to cruiser patrol. In 1983, then Patrolman Medders, was transferred to the Detective Bureau where he remained for four years. For the next two years, he was in patrol circulation, then in 1989, he was reassigned as a Narcotics Detective in the detective Bureau.
In early 1990, Medders was promoted to the rank of sergeant and until 1992 was in charge of the Narcotics Unit. Another promotion to Lieutenant occurred in 1992. Lieutenant Medders served as shift commander. While he was a lieutenant, he was assigned to the Service division as a training officer in 1993, then reassigned to the Detective Bureau as the Investigative Commander in 1994.
On December 15, 1997, Investigative Commander Michael Medders was sworn in as Chief of the Elyria Police Department. Chief Medders has restructured the Police Department Staff to include over 100 sworn officers, 50 full time and 8 part time civilian staff.
