REF: Passing of Conterfeit Bills
DATE: September 14, 2000

In the last two to three weeks the Elyria Police Department has investigated several incidents of people passing or attempting to pass counterfeit U.S. currency fifty and one hundred dollar bills. Most of the cases involve new style bills, but old bills also have been seen in these transactions. This has occurred in the City of Elyria and in Townships adjacent to our City.

Counterfeit detection marker pens are available at most office supply companies and can be purchased at a reasonable cost. If you receive a bill from someone and you suspect the bill to be bogus, you may keep the bill and call the police. If the person(s) who are attempting to pass the bill become upset, they can stay until the police arrive to assist in the investigation. If the suspect insists on receiving the bill back from you, give him/her the bill in question.

If the person(s) who are passing the bill attempt to leave prior to the police arriving, do not confront them, but attempt to obtain a description of the person(s), the vehicle license plate number and anything else which you feel would assist the police department in tracking down the person(s) involved. At no time should you place yourself in jeopardy in such a situation.

Anyone with information regarding incidents of passing counterfeit bills can call the Elyria Police Department at (440) 323-3302, and request a road patrol officer to respond to the scene.
